Questions About Religious Donations

  • ZakatIs my Zakat distributed only to eligible recipients?

Yes. UMMA distributes Zakat exclusively to the categories defined in Surah At Tawbah (9:60), and our field teams verify eligibility before distribution. On this site your Zakat can only be applied to campaigns marked Zakat eligible.

  • ZakatHow do I know how much I owe?

Use the Zakat calculator. It works out your net qualifying wealth, compares it to the nisab threshold, and takes 2.5% of the balance.

  • ZakatWhen is Zakat due?

Zakat is due once a lunar year has passed on wealth that has stayed above the nisab threshold. Many people pay during Ramadan, but any date works as long as you keep it consistent year to year.

  • SadaqahWhat is the difference between Zakat and Sadaqah?

Zakat is obligatory, fixed at 2.5% of qualifying wealth once you pass the nisab threshold. Sadaqah is voluntary, any amount, any time.

  • SadaqahWhat is Sadaqah Jariyah?

Ongoing charity: a donation that keeps working long after the moment it is made. UMMA Farm is built this way. A sponsored tree keeps producing, and the proceeds keep funding relief.

  • FidyaHow much is Fidya per day?

We calculate Fidya at $10 per missed fast: a full day of food for one person, given through our own food programs.

  • FidyaWhat if I can make the fasts up later?

Then Fidya does not apply. Fidya is for a reason that is expected to last, not a temporary one. If you can make the days up, make them up.

  • KaffarahHow much is Kaffarah?

Feeding sixty people, one meal each, for each fast broken intentionally. We calculate that at $5 per meal, which is $300 for each fast.

  • KaffarahIs Kaffarah the same as Fidya?

No. Fidya is for fasts you were genuinely unable to keep. Kaffarah is expiation for fasts broken deliberately without a valid reason, and it is much larger.

  • AqiqahWhen should Aqiqah be performed?

Traditionally on the seventh day after birth. If that day passes, it can still be performed later.

  • AqiqahWill I know when it has been carried out?

Yes. Your donation is recorded against a campaign, and campaign updates from the field team appear in the UMMA app.
