Kaffarahكفارة

Expiation for intentionally breaking a fast, by feeding 60 people.

Kaffarah is due when a fast during Ramadan is broken intentionally and without a valid excuse. The expiation is to fast sixty consecutive days or, where that is not possible, to feed sixty people in need. UMMA fulfills the feeding option through our own food programs, at $5 per meal.

Common Questions

  • How much is Kaffarah?

Feeding sixty people, one meal each, for each fast broken intentionally. We calculate that at $5 per meal, which is $300 for each fast.

  • Is Kaffarah the same as Fidya?

No. Fidya is for fasts you were genuinely unable to keep. Kaffarah is expiation for fasts broken deliberately without a valid reason, and it is much larger.
