Governance

How UMMA is run, and who holds it accountable.

UMMA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) based in New York, running relief programs abroad and businesses and community spaces at home. As the work has grown, so has the need for clear lines of responsibility: who decides, who checks, and what gets published. This page sets them out.

How UMMA Is Run

UMMA Family Council: the senior leads of each program and region. It coordinates the work across countries, so the programs pull in one direction.

Governance Committee: writes and reviews the policies, standards and procedures UMMA works to, and looks for risks before they reach the communities we serve.

Board of Trustees: oversees the leadership and holds it to UMMA's mission and values. Its members are experienced leaders from a range of backgrounds.

What We Hold Ourselves To

Working together: teams and partners talk to each other, so nobody works alone.

Openness: regular reporting, published finances, and plain explanations of how decisions are made.

Honesty: integrity and fairness in everything we do.

Every region at the table: each place UMMA works is represented in its leadership.

Keep improving: how we govern is reviewed and refined regularly.

What a Donor Can Check

Finances: we file a public Form 990 every year and publish each one on our financial disclosure page. We do not claim an independent audit, because we have not published one.

Oversight: the Board of Trustees and the Governance Committee check the work independently of the people doing it.

Safeguards: policies against conflicts of interest, corruption and unethical behavior.

Reporting: donors hear what their donations did, through reports and updates.
