About
Build a kitchen. Fuel O'block and neighboring communities with dignity.
THE PROMISE
Build a kitchen. Fuel a bus. Feed O'Block with dignity.
YALA is opening a nonprofit restaurant in O'Block, Chicago paired with a Hope Bus that delivers the same food, from the same kitchen, to neighbors who need it most.
This is how jobs are created. This is how hunger becomes predictable and dignity becomes routine.
Donate today to help open YALA + launch the Hope Bus in O'Block.
THE PLACE
O'Block is one of Chicago's most talked-about neighborhoods often defined by headlines, rarely by the people who live there.
Here, families work hard, elders stretch fixed incomes, and young people grow up navigating uncertainty that most of the city never sees. Food is available but reliable, dignified access is not.
Hunger here isn't a lack of generosity. It's a lack of consistency.
YALA exists to change that, not with one-off handouts, but with a place and a schedule people can count on.
ONE KITCHEN, TWO AUDIENCES
One warm, professional kitchen sits on the corner.
Every day, it serves affordable, comforting meals to the neighborhood.
At the same time, that very kitchen prepares meals for neighbors who can't make it in, delivered each week by the Hope Bus.
Same food. Same standards. Same dignity.
THE RESTAURANT
YALA is not a pop-up or a soup kitchen.
It's a real restaurant, professionally staffed, locally hired, and priced so working families can eat well without stress.
People come because they want to.
Behind the scenes, trained staff prepare daily batch windows that serve both the dining room and the Hope Bus, using the same recipes, ingredients, and quality standards.
No second-tier meals. No shortcuts.
THE OUTREACH
On set days each week, often Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Hope Bus rolls out.
It stops at trusted partner locations: youth centers, schools, senior housing, and community sites.
Meals are hot, organized, and served with respect.
The faces become familiar. The days become predictable.
That predictability is what restores dignity.

WHAT YOUR DONATION DOES
Your donation doesn't disappear into a program.
It builds something permanent.
- One-time donations help open the restaurant and launch the Hope Bus
- Monthly donations keep routes running and calendars full
Consistency matters more than hero moments.
Every contribution helps sustain jobs, meals, and a promise the neighborhood can trust.
LOCAL SUPPORT
YALA is not coming to O'Block alone.
We are supported by local leaders who have spent years showing up for youth and families in this community.
Sheikh Saddiq, a respected Chicago-based community figure and youth advocate, supports this initiative because it invests in people, not optics.
This project is being built with the community, not for it.
TRANSPARENCY & NONPROFIT COMMITMENT
YALA operates as part of the Umma Foundation, a nonprofit organization.
Your donation is:
- Restricted to this project
- Used for operations, jobs, and meals
- Reported on quarterly
Donors receive clear updates showing:

Trust is built by telling the truth, consistently.
DONOR RECOGNITION
We believe generosity should be honored, tastefully.
Major donors may be recognized through:
- On-site acknowledgment
- Hope Bus naming

Recognition is about accountability, not ego.

What Is Happening
Need does not stop at the border. People sleep outside in American cities through the winter, and families a few streets from us are choosing between rent and food.
What UMMA Is Doing
The Hope Bus runs a weekly route with hot meals, blankets and hygiene kits, starting in New York and adding cities as the funding allows. Our restaurants give away food from their own kitchens. Your donation pays for the meals and keeps the route running.
Common Questions
Is my donation secure?
Card details go to Stripe and never reach our servers. We see the amount, the campaign and the receipt address, nothing else.
Are my donations tax deductible?
Yes, to the extent allowed by law. You receive a receipt for every donation, and all of them are in My Donations, in the UMMA app or your dashboard on the web.
Can I give my Zakat to UMMA?
Yes, and only to campaigns marked Zakat eligible. Zakat is restricted to the categories in Surah At Tawbah (9:60), so UMMA will not let it be applied anywhere else. If no eligible campaign is open, we say so rather than route it elsewhere.
How do you decide where donations go?
Donations go to the campaign you choose, and that campaign shows its own progress. If you donate without choosing one, funds go where the need is greatest at that moment.
Can I cancel a recurring donation?
Yes, at any time, in My Donations in the UMMA app or on the web. No email and no phone call. Gave without an account? The link in your receipt email cancels it.
Something went wrong with my donation. Who do I tell?
Email hello@ummafoundation.org with the receipt number and a person replies. Refunds follow the refund policy on this site.
What happens if this campaign does not reach its goal?
The work carries on with what was raised. Donations are not held back waiting for a total and they are not moved to another campaign: they go to this one, and the progress bar shows exactly where it stands.
What happens if it raises more than its goal?
It keeps accepting donations and the extra goes to the same work. A goal is what we planned for, not a cap on the need, and a campaign that has passed its goal is still the campaign you chose.
